Loss of Sandwich Panels by Statistical Energy Analysis Approach. ASME. J. Vib. Acoust.2010;132(1):011004-011004-7. doi:10.1115/1.4000459. Predicting the Sound Transmission Loss of Sandwich Panels by Statistical Energy Analysis Approach Tongan Wang, Shan Li, Shankar Rajaram, Steven R. Nutt 1. University of Southern California, 3651 Watt Way, VHE 602, Los Angeles, CA 90089 Abstract: A statistical energy analysis (SEA) approach is used to predict the sound transmission loss (STL) of sandwich panels numerically. Unlike conventional SEA studies of the STL of sandwich panels, which consider only the antisymmetric (bending) motion of the sandwich panel, the present approach accounts for both antisymmetric and symmetric (dilatational) motions. Using the consistent higher-order sandwich plate theory, the wave numbers of the waves propagating in the sandwich panel were calculated. Using these wave numbers, the wave speed of the propagating waves, the modal density, and the radiation efficiency of the sandwich panels were determined. Finally, the sound transmission losses of two sandwich panels were calculated and compared with the experimentally measured values, as well as with conventional SEA predictions. The comparisons with the experimental data showed good agreement, and the superiority of the present approach relative to other approaches is discussed and analyzed.

Prediction of Noise Transmission Loss and Acoustic Comfort Assessment of a Ventilated Window using Statistical Energy Analysis

In this paper, a novel analytical method was developed based on statistical energy analysis framework to evaluate sound transmission loss through ventilated windows. The proposed method was compared to numerical and analytical models available in the literature. Results showed the success and advantage of the proposed model in predicting the acoustic performance of the ventilated window and the...

Acoustics of Sandwich Structures

USC’s work on sandwich structure acoustics began in 1998 and has evolved in close collaboration with the M.C. Gill Corporation, a leading manufacturer of sandwich panels for aircraft interiors. The work has had both an applied mission and an academic focus, and presents an example of university-industry collaboration can produce mutual benefit while advancing scientific understanding. Here, we ...

Identification of sound transmission characteristics of honeycomb sandwich panels using hybrid analytical/one-dimensional finite element method

For the purpose of identifying the sound transmission characteristics of honeycomb sandwich panels that are commonly used in aircraft industries, Finite Element Method (FEM) combined with Boundary Element Method (BEM) has been widely used. However, the latter approach is not always applicable to high frequency analysis since it requires a large number of FEM/BEM meshes resulting in high computa...

25th INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE AERONAUTICAL SCIENCES IMPROVEMENT OF THE SOUND TRANSMISSION LOSS OF PANELS BY MEANS OF ACOUSTICALLY TUNED RESONATORS

When a panel is excited, either structurally or acoustically, sound is radiated from the panel. Previous research by the author has shown that tuned acoustic tube resonators can be used to reduce the radiated sound. A one-dimensional analytical model model was validated by experiments in an impedance tube and good agreement was found between model and measurements. In this paper, the model is e...
